Book Bench : All Hail Brighton

Hove Arts’ very own Martha Mitchell has left her creative mark on the city by designing one of the 30 vibrant book benches currently dotted around Brighton. If you get a chance, pop along to Churchill Square to admire her wonderful work in person! Don't forget to snap a picture while you're there and share it on Instagram, making sure to tag #hove_arts and #marthamitchelldesign so everyone can see just how much you enjoy and appreciate her fantastic design. Amaze, is a local charity supporting families with disabled children, has partnered with Wild in Art to bring you The Story Trail—a free, fun and family-friendly adventure.

Between 12 September and 8 November 2026, you can explore a city-wide gallery of more than 30 BookBenches. Each one is an open book, designed by a talented local artist and waiting to be discovered.

The story continues with a heartwarming collection of smaller BookBenches, lovingly decorated by local schools and community groups, adding their own chapters to our city’s tale.

Wander through our vibrant city, pause, and take a seat. Immerse yourself in a world of stories our community has to tell. Our BookBenches are more than just beautiful art; they are a place for us all to belong.

This BookBench celebrates everything we love about Brighton. Inspired by the city’s beautiful seaside setting, iconic landmarks, and rich creative spirit, the sculpture reflects Brighton’s vibrant, diverse, and welcoming character. Drawing on the energy and charm that make the city so distinctive, the design aims to capture Brighton’s unique identity and sense of community. Martha has lived in Brighton since she was 8 and feels very lucky to call such a wonderful city her home -it has been very special to be able to reflect that in her BookBench.
