Hove Arts Artist Inspires at AOH Awards!

The vibrant artistic spirit of Hove is buzzing with excitement once again! We are thrilled to share that our local talent is receiving well-deserved recognition at this year’s Artists Open Houses (AOH) awards. It is a true testament to our community’s creativity that after Hove Arts artist Dion Salvador took home a win last year, we are seeing Hove Arts continue to inspire award-nominated artists and houses.

This year, we are particularly proud to celebrate our very own Kate Scott, who is shortlisted for Artist of the Year. Kate’s work is a profound exploration of the internal and sensory worlds, defined by a unique dialogue between the artist, the canvas, and the music that fuels her process.

Kate Scott: In Her Own Words

We caught up with Kate to get a glimpse into her creative mind:

"I experience the physical act of painting like a conversation in which, by using mark making and layers of colour, I tap into the silent voice that cannot be communicated in any other way. Music is always on; it helps take my mind out of the literal and into the abstract language of paint."

For Kate, painting is an intuitive process of additions and subtractions. Whether she is processing a walk in the rain, a profound piece of music, or even navigating a period of personal grief, the canvas becomes a mirror of her experiences.

"Sometimes when I walk into my studio, a painting will sort of ‘wink’ at me," she says. "It might demand a small pistachio green mark in the top right-hand corner. I comply, and sometimes it works—or, if it gets obliterated, it’s by a flurry of marks that move the painting to a better, truer place."
