Dion Salvador Lloyd celebrates 25 years of AOH with fellow artists.

For the past 25 years, Dion Salvador Lloyd has opened his home to the public each May as part of the Artist Open Houses during the Brighton Festival. He celebrated 25 years with some fellow Hove Arts Artists this week. Open House provides a unique opportunity for visitors not only to view his latest works fresh from the studio but also to delve into the artist's personal landscape and discover the driving forces behind his practice. This openness is a defining characteristic of Dion; his paintings are born from the heart, their warmth engaging and resonating with viewers on a deeply emotional level.

Dion thrives on setting ambitious goals for himself. In 2017, he achieved the remarkable distinction of having his paintings selected and displayed in each of the Royal Academies in the UK. In 2018, two of his paintings were chosen for the prestigious Royal Society of British Painters exhibition at the Mall Galleries. Dion Salvador Lloyd is also represented by several respected galleries in London and the UK, with an ever-growing profile of successful solo exhibitions, solidifying his position as a significant voice in contemporary British landscape painting. He is an artist who paints with his soul, inviting us to listen to the silent language of the earth. We as Brighton & Hove residents are lucky to have access to the artist and his works during the Festival. If you get the chance don't miss out make sure a visit to Dion's Studio is on your list this May.

Dion isn't just a painter; he's a translator. A translator of the unspoken, the felt, the deeply personal connection between humanity and the landscape that surrounds us. This contemporary British artist, known primarily for his evocative landscapes, doesn’t simply depict the world, he embodies it. He fills his home and studio with a curated collection of remnants and objects, gathered from his travels and experiences – not as trophies, but as touchstones, whispering stories and igniting his creative fire. These are the seeds from which his art blossoms.

Dion is drawn to the history ingrained within natural things, their hidden narratives and lingering mysteries. His driving force is a profound connection to the world around him. Painting, for him, is a conduit, a way of expressing those elusive truths that transcend the limitations of language. He paints not just what he sees, but what he feels. He paints, essentially, who he is.

His own story began in Brighton, England, in 1967, blessed with a memorable name courtesy of his father, a sculptor and vintage car enthusiast. He spent years working in London hotels, a seemingly disparate path that took an unexpected turn when a fire ravaged his flat, stripping him of his possessions. Faced with a literal blank canvas, Dion seized the opportunity for a transformative journey across Europe. It was on a beach in Turkey that the pieces finally clicked into place. He realized that his lifelong obsession with music, the emotional landscapes it evoked, and the powerful sensory responses it triggered, were the very foundation upon which he could build a career as an artist.

A prolific and self-taught painter, Dion works in bursts of inspiration with palpable energy and dynamism. His disciplined work ethic ensures a constant state of creative motion, as he explores different mediums and scales, allowing his language of paint to intuitively evolve and adapt. As his journey has unfolded, the character and confidence of his paintings have deepened, each exhibition a testament to his artistic growth, marked by increasing subtlety and power.
